We are very big Tucker fans. We travel around seeing all of them that is possible for us. We would like to know how many Tuckers had automatic transmissions and what number they are. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Just 2. Numbers 49 and 50 if I remember correctly. (Richard Jones would know for sure). The first transmission was a bit glitchy, but they had the problems corrected in the second one.

Tucker 1026 had an R1 automatic and Tucker 1042 we believe had an R2 automatic. Warren Rice was working on the R3 when the plant shut down. With the R1 in 1026 you had to put the car into drive then start the engine with your foot on the brake to keep the car from taking off. If you wanted to go into reverse you had to shut down the engine, shift to reverse , then start the engine again. There was only one forward position on the steering colum selector. I drove this car and the acceleration was outstanding. As 1042 was destroyed and only pieces of it have been found , we are not sure what the improvements were in the R2 over the R1. These transmissions were called Tuckermatic.

I've been told that R2 fixed the problem of having to shut the engine off to shift in reverse. I've no idea if they corrected the "problem" than the transmission allowed you to drive up to 50 MPH in reverse.
